Premier Bottom.jpg - PREMIER - Late model British-made brass Premier lamp with 4 in. reflector, double-bandedbottom with black bumper grip, marked PREMIER and BRITISHMADE on top, NOS condition (This late model Premier cap lamp was manufactured by the Premier Lamp and Engineering Co. Ltd. of Leeds, England. I don’t usually collect non-American made lamps but the story of the Premier lamp is an interesting one with its roots in the Wolf Safety Lamp Co. of Leeds. Wolf of Leeds had been formed to take advantage of the increasing popularity of the German-made Wolf safety lamp. The business did not do well and in 1911 the company went into liquidation. An agreement was reached with the Friemann and Wolf company in Germany by William Maurice to move the Wolf Leeds company to Sheffield and re-establish the Wolf Safety Lamp Company in England. On July 1, 1916 Maurice purchased the entire British business and moved it to Sheffield. A former director of the Wolf Safety Lamp Co. of Leeds named M. D. Cremer, following the company’s demise, started the Cremer Lamp and Engineering Company in 1913 producing lamps hired out for manufacture by other firms. With the start of WWI, German business names were not popular in England and business dropped off. The Premier Lamp and Engineering Co. was also registered as a company in 1913 and in 1919 took over Cremer’s company and began manufacturing Cremer’s approved safety lamps in 1920 with Cremer as a director. Premier manufactured acetylene cap and hand lamps as well as flame lamps under both the Premier and Crestella brand names.
